Compatibility guide. Always follow the sealer manufacturer’s bag requirements.

External sealers usually need textured bags

Channel/textured material creates pathways for air to escape while the lid is clamped. Smooth chamber pouches usually will not work correctly in a basic external suction sealer.

Rolls vs pre-cut bags

Rolls let you choose length and can reduce waste for irregular portions, but you must seal one end first. Pre-cut bags are faster and more consistent for repetitive meal prep.

What to check

  • Maximum sealing width of your machine.
  • Bag thickness the manufacturer supports.
  • Whether third-party bags are permitted under warranty.
  • Food-contact compliance and intended temperature range.
  • Whether the bag is rated for sous vide if you plan to heat it.

FAQ

Can any plastic bag be vacuum sealed?

No. External suction sealers usually need embossed/channel bags. Follow the machine and bag manufacturer instructions.

Does vacuum sealing make food shelf-stable?

No. Vacuum sealing changes the atmosphere around food but does not sterilise it. Refrigeration, freezing and food-safety rules still apply.

How we researched this guide

We compare current Australian product ranges and manufacturer specifications, then use independent testing and public owner-feedback patterns as evidence inputs. We distinguish those sources from our own analysis and do not invent hands-on experience.
